Types of stroke:

With my previous short talks on stroke diagnosis, risk factors, stroke detection we will continue today with the type of strokes. Broadly the stroke is classified into two major classes

Ischaemic stroke

This type of stroke is caused due to clot formation in the brain. It can be of two types arterial or veins. This type of stroke covers 80% to 85% of all the strokes. In the case if ischemic stroke for uniformity and research purpose there is further classification called the TOAST classification. TOAST is Trial of ORG 10172 in acute Ischaemic stroke. ORG 10172 is a clot testing drug. When this drug is getting researched or is in trial that time there should be a uniformity in the etiological diagnosis of the stroke so this classification was validated. In this classification there is

  • large vessel vasculitis disease
  • cardioembolic disease
  • small vessel occlusion
  • stroke of unknown etiology
  • stroke of other determined etiology

stroke of other determined etiology can be due to multiple other reasons like infection and inflammation. The inflammation can again be of different types like vasculitis.

In the stroke of unknown etiology there can be two etiological causes or after through diagnosis that you do not find any cause for the stroke or the incomplete evaluation of the stroke

Hemorrhagic stroke

This type of stroke is caused due to the rupture of the blood vessels in the brain. It can also be arterial or veins. It is 15% of all the strokes

Stroke Management:

Stroke Management is very important so we have to understand the etiological factors. The stroke management strategies are planned according to the factors of stroke or the etiological factors.

Stroke is preventable as well as treatable. Patients with risk factors of a stroke must undertake primary prevention of the stroke. In secondary prevention, acute stroke treatment we have the IV thrombolysis mechanical thrombolysis and Comorbid conditions.

One of the most important part of stroke treatment is the neurorehabilitation.
